An Update from the 2009 La Pine Rodeo Queen:
Jenna Jacobsen

La Pine Rodeo Association Queen Jenna

Hello everyone! I have been having an outstanding time this summer that I could only be experiencing because of the La Pine Rodeo Association. Representing this association full of so many brilliant volunteers and people has truly been my honor and pleasure.

The La Pine Rodeo this year was so much fun! It is an experience that I will never forget. My family and I enjoyed ourselves greatly. The volunteers did a great job to put this small town rodeo on. The rodeo had really good livestock this year, a fine hand of judges, but most of all a lot of excellent cowboys and cowgirls. We had a quite a few Rodeo Royalty come out and join us in our grand entries as well. Thank you to all of them!! For those of you who don’t know I worked cattle both performances and both days of slack. My family and I held a strawberry shortcake reception for all visiting royalty, board members, volunteers, and we even had a few cowboys stop by after the Saturday performance of the rodeo. We had a lot of people come out which made it very fun. I participated in the parade Saturday morning where I handed out lots of patriotic necklaces and my dad accompanied me walking along side me, handing out candy and rodeo flyers. Toward t he end of the performance Sunday I walked around and passed out autograph sheets, more necklaces and took pictures with our audience. It was just a great time and I look foreword to going back future years to come!!

My next rodeo was July 25th and 26th which was the Jefferson county fair and rodeo. I attended the Friday night performance doing a run in and after signing a few autographs and hanging out for a bit watching a little of the Chuck Wicks concert after the rodeo. I was not able to attend the following performance the next day because I had a family function in Portland I needed to attend.

July 28th through August 2nd my parents and I stayed at the Deschutes County fairgrounds for the fair and rodeo. Let me tell you it was a VERY VERY hot week J, but a great time still. I helped Queen Kristen Russell with pushing out cattle in slack on Tuesday evening as well as the performance that was supposed to be on Saturday evening but got cancelled because of heavy rain so was moved to Sunday afternoon. I also was in the run in every night of the rodeo, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and then Sunday afternoon. As I said the performance was cancelled on Saturday evening but Kristen and I were dressed and ready so we went out into the muddy arena with at least a couple inches of water and waved to the entire crowd that came out for the performance. We helped carry some things for camera men and such who didn’t want to have to walk through the deep mud and also entertained the crowd a little by participating in the clown Tracy Reed’s jokes. Saturday Morning I attended the parade, which I got second place in, and then Saturday around noon I attended Queen Kristen’s Luncheon. After the luncheon all of the queens headed over to the buyers BBQ to mix and mingle some. During the week I accompanied Kristen to a few of her functions as well. My parents were alongside me through everything as always and I thank them tremendously for all the help and support, as it would be very difficult to fulfill my duties as I am without them.

My next rodeo was August 7th through the 9th which was the wheeler county fair and rodeo in Fossil. My parents and I headed over to the fairgrounds Friday morning. We got there mid day. I participated in the playday on Friday evening as well as my mom. I got first place in the poles earning $5! J After all the normal playday events, Poles, Barrels and the Scurry Race they had Steer Daubing, The boot race and the cowhide race. In Steer Daubing I think I got 4th or 5th. When I nodded the first time my cow did not run out so my horse Roxie got a little hot so the second time when it did run out we were a little behind. The boot race I got second out of 15 or so people. We all were in a line on one end of the arena and took off running to the other end. I ran straight to my boot, stopped and jumped off. But…. I couldn’t find it. Ha Well Roxie, my horse was standing on top of it J. I threw it on and ran back down for a close second place finish. Then the cowhide race I did with my dad. You ride double to the other end of the arena. The person in the back jumps off, gra bs the rope attached to the cowhide hands it to the rider, jumps on the cowhide, the rider dally’s and then you run back to the other side of the arena. I was a little slow on my dally J oops, but I got it and my dad rode bac k on the cowhide like it was a kneeboard! We got second in our heat, but had a really fun time!! Saturday morning I rode in the parade and got first place as well as the grand prize for the whole parade! J Pretty exciting. After the Parade my parents and I attended Queen Kia’s queen luncheon. I rode in the grand entry both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Saturday after the run in Kristen Russell and I walked around with a pink boot and collected money for Breast Cancer, as well as signed autographs. Then we attended the street concert after the rodeo. It was a good time and a fun little rodeo.

The next rodeo was Tygh Valley fair and rodeo, which we just got back from yesterday. I have to say it was definitely one of my more favorite rodeo’s I have attended so far. We headed down there and got there aro und 3pm. My mom and I then rode in the Farmers Fun Day Playday that evening. My mom and I did all the team events together. We won the soccer ball race, got second in the eight-legged race and got third in the water balloon toss, and by the way all these were on horses. I won the egg race, got third in the key race, got third in the barrels and fifth in the poles. On Friday we hung around the fairgrounds and did fair stuff, I rode around some and we went and checked out the fair. I went to the rodeo Friday night and did my run in and met some queens from other areas. After the performance I got asked to help with slack that went till around midnight. On Saturday they didn’t have a parade or a luncheon, but we went into the little town and had breakfast, we went up to the lawnmower races in Wamic for a couple hours, which was really fun, and then in the afternoon I rode in the horse show at the fairgrounds. I got second in the barrels by .03 seconds, dangit. J I got third in the poles and then I got second in the key race. I rode in the run in that night as well. During the rodeo they had Native American Horse races and Donkey races, which was really fun and funny to watch J. On Sunday they had a Demolition Derby so we stuck around and watched some of that which was pretty awesome. It was a great time and we enjoyed ourselves yet again!!

This next weekend August 21st through the 23rd we are headed out to the Grant County Fair and Rodeo in John day, Oregon. Then after that, the first week in September we are going to the NPRA finals.

I would like to say thank you so much to all the rodeo fans that came out to my rodeo this year, thanks to all the board members and volunteers who put this on and have helped me this year. I would like to say thank you to all of my Sponsors for sponsoring me this year as well. McDonalds, Mary Kay consultant Holly Vincent, Karen “tutu” Tindall, Purina, Country Feed, SHS Graphics, My parents and Stark Saddlery. Thank you to my great horses Roxie (mainly) the horse I can do anything on and my main queen horse!), Nikita (for coming along and working on being a better rodeo horse J) and Liza (being moms four legged wheel chair as well as a backup can do anything horse). I am so grateful to have such great horses to carry me through the rodeo season. And most of all thank you to my parents for always supporting me, taking me to all these rodeos, devoting a lot of time and money to me20being a queen and the best possible queen I can be at that. I love you very much and I could never thank you enough for all you do!

I will updating you on my endeavors again soon, as for now hope you all are having a great summer and I will see everyone at the La Pine Fall Playday September 12th.

Yours Truly,
2009 Queen Jenna Jacobsen

How Jenna Became 2009 La Pine Rodeo Queen

Jenna Jacobsen is from Sisters, Oregon.  She attends Sisters High School as a sophomore.  She is very active with her horse in OHSET, drill team, CTPA, CCC, RRR and when she is not on her horse, Jenna is on the high school tennis team and is a student ambassador.

On the applicant’s registration I asked the girls, “Who do you look up to? And why?”  Jenna said both her mom and dad.  She comes from a very supportive family and they are ready to do whatever LRA asks of them.  Jenna is a past Rodeo Princess so she knows the “ropes.”  I am very excited and honored to have known Jenna for the past seven years from other local horse groups, and I myself watching Jenna, her horse and her family, know that they will not let La Pine Rodeo Association down.

Thanks to Ghost Rock Ranch for hosting this years try outs!

The La Pine Rodeo Queen Sponsors are Country Feed & Pet Supply and Purina.

Click here for a special message from Kristen Russell, La PIne 2008 Rodeo Queen! Thanks for being an excellent queen and setting the standard for future La Pine Rodeo queens to come! Congratulations on becoming the 2009 Deschutes County Rodeo Queen!
