2010 La Pine Rodeo Queen

My name is Chrystal Bates. I am 17 years old and a senior at La Pine High School. The activities I am involved in at school include playing on the varsity soccer team, being treasurer of National Honors Society, being secretary of the forestry club, participating at their competitions, and riding on the varsity OHSET team (Oregon High School Equestrian Team). I am a member of two 4-H clubs, Chief Paulina Riders, a horse group, and High Country Livestock Refined Swine, a pig group. I was also on the National Hippology team from Deschutes County that represented Oregon 4-H at the National Stock show in Denver Colorado this January. I volunteer annually at the Lapine Christmas baskets and do community service through 4-H and my forestry class. My family and I also compete through Rim Rock Riders and Cascade Cattle Club.

Porter, my 8 year old palomino paint gelding, will be my equine partner during this year. He is a very trusting and inquisitive horse who comically suffers from an equine version of ADD. I have had Porter for most of my high school career and I believe we make a great pair. Our personalities are parallel, so teaching him new things is easy for me. I primarily used him for equitation and performance classes early in his showing career, but this past year I have worked to expand his résumé to include drill team, sorting, team penning, reining, and aspects of roping. He is really shaping up to be a great all around horse! If need arises, I have two other horses that would be readily available to me. Sassy is a 21 year old bay grade quarter horse mare, I can tell you that her name fits her perfectly. She loves to go fast and turn and is awesome on cows. Casper is a 14 year old cremello grade quarter horse gelding. He is a real steady and reliable guy who can do it all from English pleasure to drill team and never bat an eye.
